Girl Around Town...Tecoya Harris

I always appreciate love and support whenever I embark on a journey or a project. I have always appreciated the love and support of Black Girls Reign, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Ms. Tecoya Harris was behind it. Tecoya created Black Girls Cheer and Black Girls Reign each to highlight black women in fields that she felt were not always explored. One being professional cheerleading and the other is pageantry.

Tecoya got started her ventures because as a former professional cheerleader and pageant queen, she wanted other women to be able to experience some of the amazing things she experienced. She realized that neither one of those avenues were heavily marketed in the black community so she wanted to add that voice. Once she retired her field boots and crown, she started the pages so that black women could feel supported, learn about opportunities, and be able to engage in discussion around related topics.

Her motto is "You are never too old to set another goal, or to dream a new dream." -C.S. Lewis

So, what is Tecoya's goal? Her goal is to connect black women in both these areas of interest through workshops, panel discussions, and social events. She believes if we are ale to have a stronger support system, we can see more success in these areas. Currently, she is starting a #QueensLinkUp Tour that will allow Queens to engage in social or service oriented activities in different cities. The first event will be held in Denver, CO on January 31st (today).

What does Tecoya want people to know about her? "I am an open book, but I'm always looking for ways to collaborate. I love event planning, but the arts are my passion. I grew up as a dancer, but feel blessed to be able to explore acting as my new craft." Her fun facts: "I love bowling. I started bowling when I was 8 years old and played on competitive teams until I got to college. I was much better in high school, but I can still hold my own on the lanes."
