Weeksville is one of America's first free black communities during the 19th century. What is most astonishing is that they were not ex-slaves. Most stories of black people starting communities in America were of those started by freed slaves. Although, I've lived in Brooklyn most of my life it was a surprise when I found out 10 years ago that this place existed. Growing up I went to predominantly white schools, and they never mentioned the contributions that black people made to NYC. I do appreciate DAR for informing me about this historical location, and my mother's birthday as the chance to finally visit. To learn more about Weeksville, click here.
